14 My Language Learning Class For You (11042009)

Amharic is the most widely-spoken language here. There are also many other languages (between 80 and 200) just in this country for other people groups. Some people also speak English, more in the downtown area. So far, I have been trying to learn new languages... and I have ended up learning mostly Amharic. Here is what I have learned:

Xabier Yeastalen: May God provide for you on my behalf
Amaseganalu: Thank you
Ow: Yes

I: No
Ishi: Okay
Becca: Enough
Salamno: Peace
Ciao: Goodbye
Leba: Thief
Fidel: Alphabet (there are 236 characters in their fidel)
Injera: Pancake/crepe made from teff (a grain from here) after it has fermented. It tastes sour, is only cooked on one side and is what you scoop food up with and eat. (They don't use silverware... so you eat your utensils.) In their translation of the Bible, it says: “Give us this day our daily injera,”

(except the rest is also in Amharic).
Shiro: Crushed powders made into a hummus-type bean/pea dip. It is reddish-orangish-brown and goes on injera.
Takamino: Specific type of shiro... the pure, thicker shiro that isn't runny.
Gobez: Clever
Ayzosh/Ayzo: Be strong (for girl/boy)

Practice well while I am gone. I think I am only going to speak this, a language for another people group here and Swahili when I come home.

Ciao,

Laura

  2. 2 Things...

    1. Isn't injera great?! Not only in the concept of "eating your utensils", but just in general. Every form of it I've ever had has been SO good.

    2. Why do you know the word for "thief"? Seems kind of random for this particular list.

  3. Hey,

Sounds like you are getting along well in your journey. I am sure the Lord has lots to teach you and has opened your eyes to a multitude of things. Know exactly the meal you are talking about. We ate Ethopian one time and it was the same way! Love ya,
    Brenda
